UFC 308 Preview
UFC 308 is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The event features an exciting lineup, headlined by a high-stakes featherweight title fight between Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway.
Topuria, celebrated for his technical skills and unbeaten record, will face Holloway, a fan favorite with a storied legacy in the featherweight division. Both fighters are eager to establish their dominance, especially Topuria, who will be defending his title against one of the sport’s most experienced strikers. The card will also feature a welterweight matchup between Geoff Neal and former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, setting the stage for an exhilarating day of fights.
Other significant matchups on the main card include a middleweight clash between former champion Robert Whittaker and undefeated contender Khamzat Chimaev, promising a thrilling contest as both fighters vie for a future title shot. Additionally, featherweights Lerone Murphy and Dan Ige will go head-to-head, along with light heavyweights Magomed Ankalaev and Aleksandar Rakić. Rising middleweight Shara Magomedov will take on Armen Petrosyan, contributing to a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents that promises to attract a global audience. Abu Dhabi has become a central hub for UFC events, offering a unique schedule that caters to both local and international fans.
Ilia Topuria will make the first defense of his featherweight title against former champion Max Holloway in one of the year’s most anticipated matchups. Topuria claimed the championship in February with a spectacular second-round knockout of titleholder Alexander Volkanovski, leaving the Australian slumped against the fence. This victory improved Topuria’s record to 7-0 in the UFC and 15-0 overall, making “El Matador” the first Georgian and Spanish champion in UFC history.
Holloway’s journey to reclaiming the featherweight title seemed blocked while Volkanovski held the belt, but Topuria’s rise has opened the door. Holloway claimed the BMF title from Justin Gaethje at UFC 300, knocking out “The Highlight” just before the buzzer, showcasing a dominant performance. The build-up to this fight has been compelling, highlighted by verbal exchanges between the two. Topuria, confident and skilled, faces Holloway, one of the most battle-tested fighters on the roster, making this a captivating matchup between a rising star and a fan favorite.
Whittaker remains a formidable presence in the middleweight division; his only losses have been against current champion Dricus Du Plessis and former two-time titleholder Israel Adesanya. After securing a unanimous decision victory over Paulo Costa at UFC 298 in February, he followed up with a first-round knockout of Ikram Aliskerov in June, further cementing his status as an elite contender. Meanwhile, Khamzat Chimaev has become an intriguing figure in recent years, competing only four times in the last four years due to health issues, yet remaining unbeaten after narrowly defeating former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in a short-notice bout last October in Abu Dhabi.
In a pivotal light heavyweight matchup, Magomed Ankalaev will face Aleksandar Rakic just weeks after Alex Pereira defended his title for a third time this year. Ankalaev started 2024 with a second-round knockout victory over Johnny Walker, resolving their previous no-contest incident from UFC 294 due to an illegal knee. The 32-year-old is unbeaten in his last dozen fights and brings a comprehensive skill set to the Octagon.
Middleweights Abus Magomedov and Brunno Ferreira will clash in a bout aimed at maintaining momentum as the year winds down. After two consecutive losses to Sean Strickland and Caio Borralho, Magomedov rebounded with a dominant win over Warlley Alves in May. Ferreira has shown promise with a 3-1 record in his four UFC bouts since earning a contract on Season 6 of Dana White’s Contender Series, with all his fights ending in the first round. Nzechukwu has faced challenges finding consistency at this level, posting a 6-5 record in the UFC after stepping up in weight following consecutive setbacks. After a long hiatus since September 2022, Barnett steps in to replace Justin Tafa. Naurdiev, a previously well-regarded welterweight prospect, returns off a first-round submission victory in his middleweight debut at Brave CF 79. Silva enters on a three-fight losing streak, having most recently suffered a technical decision loss to Chris Weidman in a contentious match in Atlantic City last March.
