Canada Prepares for 2024 U20 Pan-American Championships

OTTAWA — Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) proudly announces the 20 athletes, coaches, and support staff representing Canada at the 2024 U20 Pan-American Championships, from July 11-13 in Lima, Peru.

“Team Canada is sending a seasoned group of young international wrestlers to the U20 Pan American Wrestling Championships in Peru. We are delighted to see many of our talented athletes with prior international experience, which augurs well for this championship. This tournament is a crucial step toward the World Championships later this summer,” said Chris Woodcroft, WCL High Performance Director.

Alongside their international experience, the team features athletes with prior Pan-Am podium successes. All team members aim to impress and secure a solid position for the U20 World Championships, taking place from Sept. 2-8 in Pontevedra, Spain.

Representing Canada in Greco-Roman wrestling will be Abbotsford, British Columbia’s Jorawar Dhinsa. Competing at 130kg, Dhinsa was the Canadian representative for the Pan-American Olympic Qualifiers earlier this year, finishing fifth. He also placed fifth at the Senior Pan-Am Championships at 130kg and earned a silver medal at the 2024 U23 Pan-Ams in freestyle. Now, he aims to add a U20 medal to his 2024 achievements.

In men’s freestyle, Guelph, Ontario’s Nathan Hunyady, a past medalist, will compete at 65kg. Hunyady, who won silver at the 2023 U20 Pan-Am Championships, will strive to upgrade his medal to gold in 2024.

On the women’s side, Abbotsford’s Rupinder Johal will seek her second Pan-Am Championships medal. Johal, who won gold at the 2022 U17 Pan-Ams at 73kg, will now compete at 76kg, aiming for another gold.
