Chris Jericho Explains Why He No Longer Lifts Weights

Chris Jericho, with nearly 35 years of wrestling under his belt, is known for his ability to evolve both in and out of the ring. However, his transformations aren’t limited to his character; they extend to his training and fitness philosophy as well. During an appearance on The Adam Carolla Show, Jericho shared insights into his current approach to exercise, which marks a significant shift from his earlier years.

Jericho’s Training Focus: Kickboxing and Diet

Jericho explained that his focus has moved away from traditional weightlifting. “I don’t lift weights, per se, anymore because my joints are getting too messed up,” he admitted. Instead, he prefers kickboxing, which he enjoys for both cardio and muscle definition. He emphasized that diet plays a crucial role in maintaining his fitness at this stage of his career.

“For me, it’s all about the diet now more than anything,” Jericho added, noting that how much weight you can lift becomes less relevant with age.

Why Weightlifting Can Be Counterproductive

Jericho explained that continuing to lift heavy weights as an aging athlete can do more harm than good. “It becomes counterproductive when you’re really straining with those joints and ligaments,” he said.

Despite scaling back on weight training, Jericho has avoided major injuries throughout his career. However, he acknowledged that wrestling remains a risky endeavor. “Wrestling is still a contact sport,” he cautioned. “You can be as careful as you want, but you need to stay durable and aware of your body.”
