The Weigh-In Stories

Aside from the main and co-main event participants, all eyes were on Brian Ortega on Friday. A weigh-in mishap involving O’Malley, Dvalishvili, Grasso, or Shevchenko could have dramatically altered the event, but Ortega, who has struggled with featherweight limits recently, was a key focus.

Ortega was initially scheduled to face Lopes at UFC 300 when both agreed to step in on short notice. Ortega had been preparing to move up to lightweight but chose to take on the challenge against the rising Brazilian talent.

However, the weight cut proved too strenuous, and Ortega withdrew on the day of the fight, leading to a heroic short-notice replacement by Dan Ige. Lopes narrowly defeated Ige after a tough week, setting up his anticipated showdown with Ortega on Saturday.

Ortega weighed in at 146 pounds, meeting the featherweight limit. Although he made weight, Ortega appeared the most drained of any fighter on the scales. Given his previous struggles and the complicated path to another title shot at featherweight, Saturday’s fight may be his last in the division.

A win would boost Ortega as he eyes a title shot at lightweight. For Lopes, a victory could solidify his rapid ascent in the 145-pound rankings. Should Lopes defeat Ortega, he could position himself as the next title contender, possibly facing the winner of UFC 308’s main event between champion Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway. Even if delayed, another win would almost guarantee his chance at the featherweight belt.
