The 12 Best Women’s Tag Teams in WWE History

As women’s wrestling became more popular in WWE, so did women’s tag team wrestling. For over 30 years, WWE didn’t have enough female wrestlers to create a strong tag team division. The original women’s tag team titles were around for six years from 1983 to 1989 but were retired because there weren’t enough teams to compete for them. The titles made a comeback in 2019, ending a 30-year break.

At first, WWE had trouble creating strong women’s tag teams. Under Vince McMahon, women were often paired up randomly, and many teams didn’t last long. However, under Triple H’s creative direction, women’s tag team wrestling has improved, and some memorable teams have been formed.

Here are 12 of the best female tag teams in WWE history, in no particular order:

Divas of Doom

The Divas of Doom were made up of Natalya and Beth Phoenix. They teamed up before there was a women’s tag team championship. Both are strong, skilled wrestlers who could play good or bad characters. Their team formed after Natalya’s previous group, the Hart Dynasty, broke up.

They first joined forces to fight Layla and Michelle McCool, known as LayCool. Though their partnership didn’t last long, they reunited years later for a match at WrestleMania 35. While they never won the tag team titles, both Natalya and Beth Phoenix held the Divas Championship once each during their time together.

The Glamour Girls

The Glamour Girls, Judy Martin and Leilani Kai, were one of the best women’s tag teams in the 1980s. They started teaming up in 1979 and joined the WWF in 1985. Managed by “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart, who helped them change their look, they became a dominant team.

They had great matches against the Jumping Bomb Angels and became two-time women’s tag team champions. However, their time in WWF ended after they were involved in a controversial title change while on tour in Japan, leading to their release.

The IIconics

The IIconics were an Australian duo made up of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay. They were best friends who had a great connection in and out of the ring. Their team started in NXT as The Iconic Duo and continued when they moved to the main roster, where they were renamed The IIconics.

They became the second-ever WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, holding the titles for 120 days. Unfortunately, the team was split up in 2020 after a match against The Riott Squad. After being separated, both women left WWE but later teamed up again in Impact Wrestling as The IInspiration.

Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross

Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross seemed like an unlikely pair at first, but they became a successful tag team, winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship twice. Although they were very different in personality, they complemented each other well in the ring.

Their friendship grew over time, and together, they achieved great success. Eventually, Alexa turned on Nikki, leading to a new storyline with The Fiend. Nikki then adopted a new superhero character called Nikki A.S.H. and went on to win more titles, including the Raw Women’s Championship.

Kabuki Warriors

The Kabuki Warriors were a tag team made up of Asuka and Kairi Sane. Both women are from Japan and are known for their incredible watch wrestling skills. Although they didn’t team up before joining WWE, they quickly became a dominant force in the women’s division. Managed by Paige at first, they eventually took control of their own destiny.

They became the fourth WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions and turned into villains when Asuka used her signature green mist on Paige, ending their partnership with her. The Kabuki Warriors held the titles for a long time, becoming the longest-reigning champions before losing them at WrestleMania 36.

LayCool

LayCool was a team formed by Michelle McCool and Layla during a time when there were no women’s tag team championships in WWE. Instead of going for tag team gold, they focused on the Divas Championship, which was a singles title.

Their partnership started quietly but soon became one of the most popular acts in the Divas division. With the support of Vickie Guerrero, LayCool dominated their competition. Their most famous storyline involved making fun of Mickie James for her weight, which got them a lot of attention. Even though Michelle was seen as the leader, Layla also had her time to shine, becoming Divas Champion by pinning Beth Phoenix in a handicap match. Together, they called themselves co-champions, each holding half of the Divas title.

Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville

Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville formed a tag team based on their real-life friendship, which began during their time on the show WWE Tough Enough in 2015. Though Mandy was the runner-up on the show, both women were signed to WWE and quickly developed strong chemistry in the ring.

They first appeared together as part of the Absolution stable with Paige but continued as a tag team after Paige had to retire due to injury. Known as Fire and Desire, Mandy and Sonya were regular contenders for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships, though they never won the titles. Their friendship faced a challenge when Mandy got involved in a romantic storyline with Otis, leading to a feud between the two. The team eventually broke up after a dramatic match where Sonya lost and had to leave WWE.

Sasha Banks & Bayley

Sasha Banks and Bayley are proof that sometimes, rivals can make the best partners. They started as fierce competitors in NXT, but their mutual respect led to a strong alliance on the main roster. Together, they formed teams like The Boss ‘n’ Hug Connection and later, the Golden Role Models.

The pair became the first-ever WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions after winning a tournament to crown the inaugural champions. Over time, their partnership evolved, especially after both turned heel. Sasha and Bayley became one of the most successful and memorable women’s tag teams, dominating both as a team and as individual competitors. Their partnership ended when tensions boiled over, leading to one of the most intense rivalries in recent WWE history.

Riott Squad

The Riott Squad was a trio consisting of Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan. Despite their different backgrounds and styles, they found a unique chemistry as a team. They were originally brought together with the idea of representing a rebellious, outsider group, somewhat inspired by “The Suicide Squad.”

Ruby was seen as the leader, Liv as the wild card, and Sarah as the powerhouse. The Riott Squad made a significant impact in WWE’s women’s division, often competing in six-woman tag matches. Though they disbanded briefly, Ruby and Liv later reunited as a tag team, showing off their strong bond. Unfortunately, Sarah was released from WWE, and eventually, Ruby was too, leaving Liv to continue on as a singles competitor.

Sasha Banks & Naomi

After her successful tag team with Bayley ended, Sasha Banks teamed up with Naomi, who was also a member of the former Team B.A.D. stable. The two reunited in 2022 with a goal to capture tag team gold once again.

Their efforts paid off when they won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 38, defeating Carmella and Queen Zelina. However, their reign was short-lived due to a controversy where both Sasha and Naomi walked out of WWE, frustrated with the company’s creative direction for the women’s tag team division. This led to their suspension, and they haven’t appeared on WWE television since, leaving fans wondering about their future.

Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax

Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax were a powerhouse team known for their contrasting styles. Shayna, a former mixed martial artist, brought a technical, submission-based approach to their matches, while Nia used her strength and size to dominate opponents.

Initially seen as an odd pairing, they quickly proved to be a formidable team, capturing the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship twice. They also hold the record for the longest combined reign as champions, with a total of 215 days. Despite their success, their partnership eventually dissolved when Shayna turned on Nia, leading to a split that saw Nia leave WWE shortly after.

Toxic Attraction

Toxic Attraction is a relatively new but already successful tag team in WWE, consisting of Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne, led by Mandy Rose. Since forming in 2021, the duo has become one of the top teams in NXT, winning the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship twice.

Gigi and Jacy have shown great chemistry in the ring, and their partnership has helped elevate the entire women’s division in NXT.
